How to Prepare for a DJ Gig

Let’s go over some key things you can do to prepare for a successful gigging season!

Spring is upon us and, for many of you, that means coming out of hibernation and getting back to booking gigs and events! So, while you’re gearing up for those club dates, weddings, birthdays, anniversaries, and whatever else you might have booked this upcoming season, it’s important to make sure you’re prepared for anything and everything. It’s also important to like this video and subscribe for more content! Now let’s run down the list!

Test your gear! Speakers, controllers, computers, make sure everything is working as it should. Get it all up and running and put it through its paces to ensure that nothing’s going to freeze up, break down, or blow out during an event. It’s also important to make sure all software and firmware is up to date!

Lighting! Make sure all your lights are working properly, programmed accordingly, and that there are no burnt-out bulbs or diodes.

Check your cables! ALL of your cables! It’s better to do this in advance than discover that an audio or DMX cable is cutting out during your set and you don’t know exactly which one is the problem.

Stands…they need to be sturdy. Be sure there are no wobbles or bends and rest easy knowing nothing’s going to fall.

Bags, covers, and cases…make sure everything is secure, sealed, and in working order. A ripped seam or a busted latch leaves you susceptible to potentially damaging your gear.

Have backups! And backups for your backups! If you have gear that gets used regularly, it’s important to have replacements just in case. Controllers, headphones, speakers…even if it’s not the same exact model, to get you through the next few gigs at least.

Now, you’ve got all this gear. Make sure you have an effective way to transport it all. We’ve got a wide variety of carts, dollies, bags, and more.

Preparing for gigging season isn’t just about gear...there’s other things you can do to make sure you’re 100% prepared:

Keep up to date on new technology and stay on top of trends! If there’s something new that’s become popular and you don’t have it, it might be wise to add it to your offerings for clients. We’ve seen this with spark machines, snow machines, and other atmospheric effects. You never know what’s going to catch on, so keep an eye out and an ear to the ground.

Take the opportunity to network with others in your industry. Doing so can open doors you didn’t have access to before and make for an incredibly successful season.

And be sure to communicate with your clients and verify as many details as possible before a gig. The fewer surprises, the better!

There you have it, a bunch of ways you can prepare for the upcoming gigging season. Is there anything you might do to prepare that we didn’t cover? Be sure to leave it in the comments below!
